In the fall 2025 semester, I implemented the following GenAI policy in my RHE 306: Rhetoric and Writing classroom. Rather than write the policy in the course syllabus, I opted for writing a letter to my students explaining the rationale for the policy.
Please read and feel free to adapt the letter below to explain the rationale for your own GenAI and machine assisted writing classroom use policy.
I am reminded of a statement I received from a former student in a first-year writing course: “Writing is a commitment to yourself.” To write is to make a commitment to an idea, a thought, a feeling. To write is to make a commitment to the development of you, the you that is sitting in the classroom today and the you that will walk into our future world.
